1-The Simple Past Tense in English:


Verb + ed






A- The verbs “ worked , played …’’ are regular verb past forms.


For examples:

- Irregular Verbs


B- The verbs “ Were , did’’ are irregular past forms;

“Were”is the simple past of “to be’’, “did” is the simple past 

of “do’’.


For examples :

Note : there is no rule for these verbs , you have to learn 

them as they are.

2- The Uses Of The  Simple Past  :


A-Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action 

started and finished at a specific time in the past.


Note: Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention 

the specific time, but they do have one specific time in 

mind.


Look for this examples :



a- Past habits action :

                                                                     
-She played the piano

 -Adam did not play the violin

     -       visited my mother every day

     -       drove 18 kilom every day when I worked with that company

    
b- Finished events in the past :

   -       She kissed her child and left


   -       Christoph Columbus discovered America in 1492



 c- Fact that was true for sometimes in the past:

   -       lived in Japan for 10 years

   -       worked 5 hours last night.

4- The Uses Of The Simple Past  Tense:


a- The simple past is used principally to describe events in the past.




Note 1Wasn’t : is the short form of = was not.


Note 1Weren’t : is the short form of = were not



Examples:


-My father was in Japan in 2005

- He was my boyfriend

Was Sarah with you ?

Were you together?

- She was my best friend

- I was not in Japan in 2005

- Adam wasn’t my boyfriend

- We were not in Iceland

- They weren’t together
