Gerunds and Infinitives are important rules in English, but they are almost devoid of any sentence in English, but what is the definition of each?

1- Gerund in English:


-Gerunds are nous formed from verb by adding ING .



2-Gerund Form :
 Verb  + ING 

3-Gerund Examples :



To work = working .

To play  = playing

To speak = speaking .

4-Gerund Uses :



a- After prepositions ( before, by, on ,in , without, at...).



b- After certain verbs ( like , dislike, enjoy, ....).

c- As a noun : Subject - Complement

Examples:


Swimming my favorite sport
or
 My favorite is swimming .


5- Infinitive in English:


a-Infinitive with To :

1- After certain verbs ( agree, hope, learn , promise , want ...)

2- After certain adjectives ( happy , lucky ...).



b-Bare Infinitive Without To :





 1- After modals : ( can, must, may , would, should ....) .



2- After LET , Help , Make 

6- Infinitive Examples:


He let me go home .



The film was sad it made me cry . 


NB :  We never find " Yy", "Ww" , "Xx". 

Examples:


Play = playing 


Know = knowing 

Box  =  boxing
