Auxiliary Verbs - Helping Verbs


1- What are Auxiliary Verbs ? in English:

- Auxiliary Verbs are function words, a kind of closed class which constituted of words that have a syntactic capacity instead of substance words .


2-Auxiliary Verbs Uses:

-Auxiliary verb is utilized to add utilitarian or linguistic substance to the data communicated by an alternate verb , considered to be the primary verb.

-  Auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs .


3-Auxiliary Verbs Examples:


👉 She has done the homework

👉 I am writing a short story

👉 Do you like tea?

👉 Can you open the windows

👉 Did you visit Dubai last holiday?

👉 There are one deck 


4-The 23 Auxiliary Verbs:


Am - is - Are / Was - Were / Be - Been - Being / Do-Does -Did / Has - have -Had / Will- Would / Can- could / May-Might- Must / Should - Shall

Helping verbs = Auxiliary verbs /Auxiliary verbs = Helping verbs

5-Auxiliary Verbs Usage:


A-Present Progressive

-In present progressive sentences, the verb expresses action that is progress as the speaker says it .

-All progressive tenses use a form of "Be".


-Examples:



 👉 I am working .

(Work is the main verb - The auxiliary verb Be is conjugated according to the subject "I") .

B- Past Progressive

-We use Past Progressives to explain what was  happening when some other event occurred .

-Examples:

- Form Past Progressive
Was or Were + Present Participle.
👉Sarah was playing tennis when the phone 
range .

(was =auxiliary that help us understand - when the main verb =play happened)

C- Future  Progressive

-Use the future progressive tense to indicate an action that will continue in the future.

- Form Future Progressive
Will + Be + Present Participle.
-Examples:


👉 I will be going to office at 8:30 .

( Will-Be = auxiliary verbs:going =  present participle completing the verb phrase).

D- Passive Voice

-The passive voice is a sentence begins with the performer of the Action ( subject, verb , object or person ) this action is performed on so this is an active sentence .

- Form Passive Voice 
Direct Object as Subject + Form of Be + Past Participle + By + Subject as Object of the Preposition.

6- Perfect Tenses - Auxiliary Verbs

- Perfect tenses in English explain the order of things.

- when we use present perfect , we are explaining what has happened up until now .

A- Present Perfect

- When we use present perfect , we are explaining what has happened up until now .

- Form Present Perfect
Has or Have + Past Participle. 
-Examples:

👉 I have visited New York many times.

(Have = auxiliary verb; visited = past participle completing the verb phrase). 

B- Past Perfect

- Past perfect explains what had happened in the past before something else happened in the past.

- Form Past Perfect
Had + Past Participle.
-Examples:


👉 I had finished my work.

(Had = auxiliary verb; finished = past participle completing the verb phrase).



C- Future Perfect

- Use the future perfect  to indicate that an action will be finished in the future.

- Form Future Perfect

Will + Have + Past Participle .



-Examples:


👉 I will have gone to school .


(Will,Have  = auxiliary verbs , gone = past participle completing the
